For years, side scan sonar manufacturers have copied each other, following the conception that a side scan sonar towfish body must always be cylindrical and torpedo-shaped. Our extensive research into underwater hydrodynamics has shown that the torpedo-shape many associate with side scan sonars may not be the optimum design. StarFish has a unique revolutionary design which increases sonar stabilisation and prevents rise under tow conditions, ultimately improving sonar image quality.
StarFish is currently the smallest towfish side scan sonar on the market measuring less than 15" long, making it easy to transport, share and operate.
The challange of constructing such a small towfish sonar also brought with it another huge challange - making such a lightweight side scan stay stable and fully submerged underwater while being towed by any boat or vessel. After months of research, the unique StarFish shape was born, revolutionising towfish body design as we know it.
Instead of the usual side scan torpedo-shape, StarFish uses advanced hydrodynamic principles to stabalise the sonar by using three fins accross the entire sonar body which combine to force the flow of water over the StarFish and keep it steady. Each side fin is angled 30° down from horizontal providing a stable, rigid platform to house the sonar transducers.
